Video editing can be fun with the right hardware and software. Otherwise, it can be a long frustrating ordeal. For serious video buffs, it is essential to have hardware dedicated to editing.Editing software takes up a lot of memory space let alone raw video footage, the bigger the memory, the better. Limited memory space may cause the editing software to hang, and ultimately lead to unwanted crashes. It is ideal to have two Hard Drives for back up.It is not necessary for novice videographers to have a dedicated computer to editing. It is wise however to always save footage or video material externally. A cramped Hard Drive may cause some serious problems for other applications.

Linear Editing

Linear Editing is the process is basically mechanical in nature. Here, you can easily edit
using Camcorders, VCR’s, Edit Controllers, Titlers, and Mixers .
In Linear Editing the editing is performed one cut at a time or in linear steps (or a series of programmed cuts) to its conclusion.
Linear Editing consists of three main categories:

1. In-Camera Editing:
Here the video shots are prepared in a way that they are shot in order and of correct time length. This process does not require any additional equipment other than the Camera recorder itself, but it does require good shooting and organizational skills at the time of the shoot.

To be continued…

When you want to take your video editing skills to the next level – especially when you’re tired of limited options in Windows Movie Maker, then you need a rig that can handle advanced editing software. Here are the basic requirements:

1. At least 2gb of RAM, more if you’re on Vista. Editing software takes up a lot of memory when in use, so you need a lot of it to make things run more smoothly.

2. A processor that is equal, more, or equivalent of an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0.

3. A capture card. This is for capturing video from video tapes and the like. Note that this may be a little pricey, as capturing software is usually bundled into it when you buy it.

4. Lots of hard disk space. Raw videos are large, and you will need storage both for the raw and edited videos.

One of the basic things to do when doing a video is making sure that you will be able to do all of this within the budget. Unfortunately, one of the more expensive expenses is the video editing software. It’s a boon then that there are opensourced and free video editing programs like Kino are out there:

The latest version was a few months ago but seems to be still relevant: ver. 1.3.2.

This is basically a re-release of 1.3.1 with some build-related fixes.

    Author Dan Dennedy
Publishing date 20.08.2008 19:15

    1.3.2 Release Notes
Just some build-related fixes.
1.3.1 Release Notes

    * Added HuffYUV AVI export
* Added option not to recover to the crash detection dialog
* New Belarusian translation by Hleb Valoshka
* Updated Finnish and French translations
* Bug fixes

    NOTE: configure’s –enable-udev-rules-dir has changed to –with-udev-rules-dir

It may not be as chock full of features as other expensive video editing softwares out there, but somehow it does the job. Cheap, actually free, but effective.

2. Assemble Editing:

Here the video shots are not structured in a specific order during shooting but are rearranged and unneeded shots are deleted at the time of transferring .This process requires, a Camcorder and VCR at the least. The original footage remains intact, but the rearranged footage is copied to a new. tape. Each scene is then “assembled” on a blank tape either one-at-a-time or in a sequence.

There are two types of Assemble Editing:

A Roll—A Roll is editing from a single source, with the option of adding effects, such as titles or transitions from a frozen image as the start of the next cut or scene.

Movie Maker and iMovie have turned what was once a task strictly for professionals, like video editing, easy. Movie Maker is an editing software using Windows, while iMovie, is bundled software for Mac users.

Both Movie Maker and iMovie are easy to manage. They have step-by-step tutorials that even inexperienced videographers and editors can easily follow. The panels are not as complicated or confusing. The playback screen instantly shows the work done without the need to publish right away.
Using the different effects available turns simple home videos into works of art. The Movie Maker and iMovie are simply the perfect edit-yourself software.

Video recording is easy. You only need to have a good working camera, an interesting subject, enough storage space for your footage and a well-charged battery, and you are set. Some people have the strength to take hours on end of video recording. The question is what to do next. Even to the person who took the video, raw material is essentially not entertaining after a few hours viewing long footage. This is where editing comes in.Video editing allows you to create impressive video presentations from your raw footage. With the right combination of properly picked frames, music, transition and pace, your raw footage can even be a work of art.

Non-Linear Editing

The Non Linear Editing is quickly gaining in popularity due to advances in technology, pricing, and product availability, this video editing technique utilizes the computer environment to aid in the editing process.

The entire process is almost entirely digital and utilizes no mechanical functions with exception of course to the input of the video sources and its final output to Tape or CD. Editing in this environment in essence is a visual Cut-and-Paste method. Here using the computer technology you can add effects, video transitions and other things to improve the Final Output.

NOTE: Linear and Non-Linear video editing techniques can be combined,
