Digital Tape vs. DVD

A lot of camcorders these days come in DVD format. Even some others use mini DVDs. Now these have advantages and disadvantages. DVD format cameras are targeted at people who are content with directly archiving their footage for playing later on. These are people who are not likely to have computers that they can use to edit content for presentations and archiving.

Older DVD-based camcorders require you to finalize a DVD first before you can play it on a computer or DVD player. This means you cannot add footage to the writeable DVD anymore, because it has been closed. Also, DVD-based recording might make it difficult to do fixes on-camera, because the footage is already burned into DVD.

Most advanced amateur videographers I know would recommend digital tape and/or flash memory as the best option because of this.
