Considering the Audience
Making a video, you should always consider your target audience int he making of the film and with that comes all the effects, titles and transitions. As with most of the video skills needed, most can be satisfied with practice, getting better as your experiences pile up. Your audience who would end up watching should be the focus of the video you are making, say for family members, symbolic and family matters with an infusion of scenes from family albums as transitions would work fine.
Making a video about your trade, say a podcast, you should try to make it short and concise, making sure to abide by the plan (if you have one, if not, then you should) or overall layout of your shots. Be sure to focus on the audience so they keep interest in your production, avoiding too little humor should you choose to inject some and not too much so as to muddle the outcome.
Video can speak more in terms of symbolic meaning due to its nature compared to stills which captures a moment in time, time is your best enemy and friend allowing you to either focus or diffuse your subjects properly. Thinking out of the overall outcome before you even shoot would be nice, and taking down notes should you need it for a narrative of the event your are filming.
